Ski Trails in Lofsdalen
Ski Trails in Lofsdalen
Lofsdalen offers 122 km of groomed cross-country trails for both classic and skate skiing, as well as touring trails through very varied terrain. Our cross-country trails are connected to the village of Lofsdalen and the cabin areas on the northern side of the valley and Lake Lofsjön. Touring trails are available on both the northern and southern sides.
To get the most out of your skiing in Lofsdalen, it is important to adjust your skiing according to elevation, season, and wind and weather conditions. In calm and sunny weather, the higher-altitude trails are the best. You should also feel free to plan your own route by following the trails that suit you and your preferences. It’s important to know that we do not groom the touring trails as frequently as our regular fitness trails. The touring trails are groomed when weather and wind allow, usually starting from week 5 at the earliest.

Open versus sheltered terrain
Some trails are laid exclusively in forested and sheltered terrain, making them more resistant to every ski trail’s worst enemy—drifting dry snow (especially from December to February). These trails include the Östan Trail and the Byspåret Trail. The two upper trails, Petterssonspåret and Hovärksspåret, run through both sheltered forest terrain (lower/southern section) and open terrain above the alpine tree line (upper/northern section). You could say the tree line cuts through these trails at their midpoint. The Upper Strådalsleden Trail traverses only the beautiful terrain above the alpine tree line, offering stunning views but is sensitive to drifting dry snow and strong winds.

Watch the Wind Direction When It’s Blowing
When planning your ski tour, it’s helpful to check the weather forecast for the day and, if possible, ensure you have the wind at your back when skiing in open mountain terrain. The wind can chill considerably, especially during the coldest winter months. Wear windproof clothing, bring an extra hat or scarf, and apply a good amount of army skin balm. The area around Hågntjärn (south of Lofsdalen) has poorer mobile phone coverage than the Lofsdalen valley itself. Move to higher ground if you need to regain coverage. Example 1: Strong or gusty north or west winds are expected during the day. You choose to ski the lower sections of the Hovärksspåret or Petterssonspåret Trails westward (clockwise) in sheltered terrain. This way, you have the wind at your side or back when you reach the terrain above the alpine tree line and ski back toward Lofsdalen on the upper Petterssonspåret, upper Hovärksspåret, or upper Strådalsleden. Example 2: Strong or gusty east winds are expected during the day. In this case, you start at the Hovärken Spårcentral, ski up toward Solgropen, and have the wind at your back throughout the upper Strådalsleden. At the grill hut, you turn down (south) into sheltered forest terrain and ski back toward Lofsdalen.
Dogs in the ski trails
Dogs are welcome to accompany their owners on a trip in our groomed ski trails. The exception is during periods of limited snow, when there is a total ban on dogs in all groomed ski trails. We will announce when such bans are in effect in our status updates. Some basic rules apply when bringing your dog to the trails:
- Maximum two dogs per skier.
- Dogs must always be leashed to their skier.
- Be considerate of other skiers. Many people are afraid of dogs, so keep your dog close and step aside.
- Dogs are not allowed to run in the classic ski tracks. All skiing with dogs must be done on the skate side..
- For everyone’s comfort, please pick up after your dog and dispose of the bag in the nearest trash can.
- A very important rule is that our ski trails are not meant for walking your dog. Please respect this.
Dog teams are referred to the snowmobile trails and the ice on Lake Lofssjön
If you are skiing with more than two dogs, i.e. a sled team, dog-pulled sled, or dog-pulled sledge, you are considered a team and should use the snowmobile trails or ski on the ice of Lake Lofssjön. Teams are not allowed in our groomed ski trails.
The rules may seem strict, but a dog’s paws can damage the groomed surface if the snow is soft. Allowing individual dogs in the trails is a compromise between our ambition to maintain the best trails for skiers and also welcome dog owners. Therefore, you should use common sense and respect the rules in place when skiing with your dog.
